A Step By Step Guide On How To Install Open VM Tools On FreeBSD
Running FreeBSD in a VMware environment is quite convenient and FreeBSD runs out of the box without hassle. That said however it is recommended to install either VMware Tools or Open VM Tools. This is about installing Open VM Tools.

Now you have 2 options. One with X11 and one without X11 support. And yes you need to choose the right one. For some reason beyond my understanding there is no switch at compile time. Instead you need to specify a dedicated port build for either with or without X11.

Installing without X11 support.

cd /usr/ports/emulators/open-vm-tools-nox11 && make install clean

Installing with X11 support.

cd /usr/ports/emulators/open-vm-tools && make install clean

And we are done here.

Spell checkers don’t – Grammar checkers don’t either.
